A termite inspection should be accomplished during daylight hours, in order to obtain a visual assessment of damage.

Obvious damage can be examined by the destruction of wood or wood products. Common areas of infestation include, but are not limited to, windows and sills,
staircases, decking, doors and trim, flooring, roof decking, and other
areas where wood is used for structural purposes.

However, termites are known to destroy the sheet-rock while consuming the paper that bonds it.

Termites will also swarm woodpiles and lumber that are left to the elements.

To determine if a termite nest is active, destroy the tunneling, if it is rebuilt the next day this indicates a live environment and should be treated.
